What Is NightFlight Expedition?
NightFlight Expedition is Dollywood's 11th roller coaster and a one-of-a-kind indoor immersive adventure in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It is unlike any coaster the park has built, weaving coaster thrills together with rushing whitewater, mountain climbs and a glowing nighttime flight inside a single indoor ride. Housed inside a 44,000-square-foot, climate-controlled building in Wildwood Grove, it runs about 5.5 minutes, the longest ride experience in the park.
Across your expedition, you'll soar on a nighttime flight over the scenic Smokies, rush through more than 500,000 gallons of surging whitewater, climb up and over a mountain ridge and glide across a mysterious, shimmering lake. That's four distinct thrills woven into one ride. At a $50 million investment, it is the single largest attraction Dollywood has ever built. You can see the latest details on the official NightFlight Expedition ride page.

When Does NightFlight Expedition Open?
NightFlight Expedition is now open. It opened to the public on August 19, 2026. Because the entire ride is indoors and climate-controlled, it operates rain or shine, so a cloudy or chilly Smoky Mountain forecast won't stand between you and your adventure.
As Dollywood's newest headliner, NightFlight Expedition is drawing enthusiastic crowds. Using a TimeSaver pass can help you get on board sooner. You can lock in your day when you buy Dollywood tickets in advance.
No reservation is required. Everyone with park admission can ride.
How Tall Do You Have to Be to Ride NightFlight Expedition?
Guests must be at least 39 inches tall to ride NightFlight Expedition. That relatively low height requirement is intentional. This is a family adventure designed for guests of all ages, so younger children can ride right alongside older siblings, parents and even grandparents.
It is rare to find a ride this innovative that everyone in the family can enjoy together. And if a little one isn't quite tall enough or ready, Parent Swap is available, so adults can take turns without waiting in line twice.
As Eugene Naughton, President of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, put it, the attraction is “designed to engage families with its vivid storytelling and to delight thrill-seekers with its innovative elements.”
What's the Story Behind NightFlight Expedition?
Like all Dollywood attractions, NightFlight Expedition is built on storytelling. Your adventure follows twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley, the niece and nephew of Wildwood Grove's resident explorer, Ned Oakley, as they search for the hidden Secret Lake, the mysterious water source believed to give the Wildwood Tree its glowing, colorful canopy.
Working out of a hangar at Hidden Hollow Aviation, the twins invent the Bioluminator, a device designed to detect and amplify bioluminescence, the natural light given off by living things. Mounted on the family's one-of-a-kind amphibious aircraft, it illuminates the Wildwood Tree's glowing roots and follows them all the way to Secret Lake. The result is a celebration of Smoky Mountain heritage wrapped inside a genuinely thrilling ride.
What Makes NightFlight Expedition One of a Kind?
NightFlight Expedition is unlike any other coaster in the world, an indoor immersive adventure that blends coaster thrills with rushing whitewater and cinematic storytelling, all with technology you won't find anywhere else. Created by Dollywood alongside Herschend Creative Studios and renowned manufacturer Mack Rides, the custom amphibious ride vehicle interacts with vivid multimedia projections, dynamic onboard and offboard audio and special lighting effects to immerse you fully in the story.
It joins a lineup of award-winning Dollywood attractions that keep families coming back year after year.
“NightFlight Expedition is truly exceptional, combining cutting-edge technology and immersive storytelling that stays true to the heart of Dollywood and the Smoky Mountains,” said Naughton. “As the largest addition in our history, it not only represents a major milestone for our company, but it also sets a new standard for guest offerings.”
